When you put your clothes in the washer, some of the fibers break off from the fabric and get stuck to the wet clothes. When you throw the clothes in the dryer, the water is removed from the fabric as it is tossed around. Warm air blows through the dryer and through the tumbling clothes. This causes those fibers to break free from the cloth. The air blows out through the venting system but first passes through the lint screen.
