What We Do
You might be wondering what it is that makes us the best in the industry. We are experts in the inspection business, and know what types of repair work to look for. We?ll check out the exterior of your chimney to make sure that everything is structurally sound, and also make sure that there are no areas that might be leaking. We?ll check out your chimney crown to make sure that there are no areas that are cracked or chipped that might be letting precipitation in, and will also take a good look at the chimney cap. If your cap is bent or twisted or rusted through, precipitation will have a direct route down your chimney, and so will any animals that are looking to find a safe, warm spot to spend the winter. Another spot where precipitation can easily sneak in is the spot where the roof meets the chimney, so we?ll check the flashings which cover this area to make sure that the flashings are secure and not rusted through or torn loose. We know that a leaky chimney can cause damage to the interior of your home as well, so we?ll be on the lookout for signs of leaking on the interior of your home and chimney, like streaks down your chimney, sagging or brown spots in your ceiling or walls, or damp areas in your firebox.
We?ll make sure to check out the interior of your chimney very closely. The chimney liner is such an important part of the chimney structure. It protects the bricks and mortar of your chimney from the corrosive effects of the smoke and chemicals that make their way up the chimney each time you burn a fire. It also protects the things in your home, any items that could possibly combust because they get too hot sitting close to your fireplace, by adding an extra heat shield between the chimney and the fire. And as an added bonus, a correctly fitted chimney liner will make your fireplace work more efficiently, which will keep more money in your bank account!
Of course, one of the big things we?ll be looking at when we inspect and clean your chimney is how much creosote has built up. Creosote, a natural by-product of wood burning, is formed when the moisture that is left in any wood you burn, no matter how well seasoned, is released during combustion. This moisture, as well as chemicals that are released, rises up your chimney and when it hits the cold part of the interior of the chimney, up near the top, condenses to form a layer of creosote. This continues to build throughout the course of the winter. The problem is that creosote is highly flammable, which means that a spark or extreme heat can cause it to ignite and cause a chimney fire. Even if you have a gas-burning appliance, creosote can build up, which is why it?s so important to have your chimney cleaned annually.
